What's On Offer
The Gers can only be described as a green landscape of gently rolling hills, wooded valleys, sunflowers, vineyards and medieval towns and villages. To the south there is the dramatic Pyrenees Mountains, only half an hour away by car, with their famous Pic du Midi, Cirque de Gavarnie, and many various picturesque valleys still inhabited by bears.
The Gers is a seemingly forgotten corner of France; it has no “autoroutes“, a single track passenger rail connects the region to Toulouse (1hr30mn away), and there are limited bus and coach services. In fact, the Gers is one of the least populated departements in France. Its capital town Auch, with 25 thousand inhabitants, is the prefecture of the Gers, and is the only sizeable town. Its cathedral’s choir and stalls are amongst the finest in Europe; its stained glass windows are exceptional. Auch, the town of d’Artagnan, is attractive, dignified and well worth visiting.
The Gers is full of enchanting scenic pleasures, rustic charm and incomparable gastronomic treats. This part of France is the main producer of Foie Gras, Armagnac, garlic and melons. The Gers is a nature-lover's delight, with lots of wildlife including buzzards, owls, eagles, woodpeckers, boar, deer, and red squirrels. The purity of Gers air renders it ideal for painters and photographers too: colours are brighter, objects sharper. In many parts, little lanes travel across the ridges of hills, and on either side, as far as the eye can see, is a landscape of dream-like quality. You will unwind quickly in this lovely corner of France.
